How to find what you are looking for

There are many ways to find what you are looking for on the internet. Roughly half of the time, Internet users use search engines. Some are good and some are not, it is all in the eye of the user.

There are literally thousands of search engines, but only 20 to 40 that are good at finding sites that you are actually looking for. I cannot tell you which ones are the best because they are constantly changing.

Some of my favorites at this time are:

www.clickey.com

www.netcraft.com

www.dogpile.com

www.webtop.com

Another way to find what you are looking for is to type it in to the location URL box and see if anything comes up. That is simple, direct and doesn’t always work, but the more the Internet grows the more it will work.

The use of directories is another popular means of finding websites.  Yahoo, which is often mistaken as a search engine, is probably the most popular directory.  But because they are slow to add new sites and often very selective about what sites they list, you may not find your best selection with them.

Yet another way to find a site that contains links to what you are looking for. You might try ‘widgit links’ and see what you come up with, widgit being whatever you are looking for.

As search engines get bogged down and bring up too many websites that have no relevance to the things you are looking for, there will be many sites pop up that have links pertaining to exactly what you are looking for. You may find them as widgitlinks.com, widgitdirectory.com or widgitlist.net.  Today there are very few sites like this, but they will appear with many useful descriptions and ratings systems.  These sites will prove most useful to those of us who don't want to research them all ourselves to find the good sites.

When you find a website that you find of interest, be certain to bookmark it.  Many times I have gone looking for a website that I had seen before and never found it again.

There are also software programs that you can put into your computer that will spend hours sifting through millions of websites looking for something specific for you.  These are powerful internet tools and often called spiders or crawlers.  You can enter very specific search requirements into them and they will work for you while you can be doing something much more productive than spending your hours searching.

The best way is just to experiment with certain things and see what works for you. Search Engines are a very popular way to go. For the last few years, they have worked very well. Today they are already bogged down with too much information and irrelevant pages to be useful for many searches.
